On Memorial Day Monday, May 27th, all men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces are commemorated. Memorial Day is formally known as Decoration Day, honoring the Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the American Civil War. Later the day was extended to honor all American soldiers who died in military service.
Traditionally, the US flag is raised briskly to the top of the flagstaff, then lowered to the half-staff position in remembrance of those who died for their country. At noon the flag is raised to full-staff as a symbol of dead soldiers being raised by the living.
Their sacrifice was not in vain. We must rise in their honor and continue fighting for liberty and justice.
Locally, a young couple painted a huge flag on A1A in Vilano Beach to remind us of our fallen soldiers (see video below).
